An immigrant to the United States from Finland in 1965, with his large family, Rev. Mikko Tervo now pastors the Lighthouse Assembly of God in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. Pastor Mikko was born in a small farming village in central Finland and thrived there until he was 12 years old. Emigrating to the United States was a pivotal point in his life and the lives of his parents and five brothers and sisters.
Pastor Tervo attended the Berean University and was credentialized shortly after he was married to Susan Lloyd in 1983. Pastor Tervo was ordained with the Assemblies of God (A/G) and, thereafter, entered the ministry as a Youth Pastor and Assistant Pastor at Faith Chapel in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. After five years of service there (in many different ministerial capacities), he felt the call to pastor a small A/G church in Hull, Massachusetts, where he oversaw a substantial renovation project, turning the old movie theatre into a adequate, workable church including a fellowship hall and Sunday school rooms. This church in Hull experienced revival and substantial growth in the Spirit and in numbers at that time.
In 1991 Pastor Mikko and his wife moved to Hampton, New Hampshire, and pastored there for a few years in an A/G church. In 1992 their son, Stephen, was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, which was a true answer to prayer especially after having been told by doctors that they would probably never be able to have children. In 1991, Pastor Tervo and his wife, Susan, went on a vacation to Finland, which is where the Lord called them into ministry to the Finns. They returned to the US with a burden and sought the Lord as to His direction and will. After selling all of their household goods, the Tervos moved to Finland with his small family where he pastored a church in Veteli near the town where he was born.
While living in Finland, Pastor Mikko and group of church people traveled to Russia on several different occasions where they were involved in a missions effort to build a church and reach out to the Russian people there. This experience proved to be pivotal and life changing. Pastor Tervo also had the opportunity to preach all over the country of Finland in many different towns, villages, and tent meetings. Their daughter, Hannah, was born in Finland in 1994, which was another blessing and answer to prayer. After ministering in the Veteli/Halsua and Jamsa Finland total of six years, church from Sault Ste. Marie Canada called Pastor Tervo to Canada . Another trans-continental move!
Pastor Tervo ministered in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada at the Finnish Pentecostal Church for total of four years. He has also pastored Canaan Assembly of God in Canaan NH for two years, preached in many churches all over North America, including Finnish Pentecostal churches in Sudbury, Lake Worth, Florida, Vancouver, Toronto, as well as A/G churches in New England, New York, New Hampshire, and elsewhere.
After all of this experience, it is a wonderful thing to be wanted by a congregation. It is also a blessing to be involved once again in English speaking ministries. It has been a tremendous opportunity to return to the United States and serve the Lord and the congregation at Lighthouse Assembly of God. We look forward to serving the Lord in Pennsylvania and seeing all the plans the Lord has for us unfold in the days to come.
